FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – December 6, 2011 – – The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily retrieved a single production lot of dry dog food due to aflatoxin levels that were detected above the acceptable limit. This product has already been retrieved from store shelves. No illnesses have been reported in association with this production lot to date, and no other Iams pet food products are involved.

Product affected by this announcement:

The affected product lot was distributed to a limited number of retailers located in the eastern United States (AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, LA, MD, ME, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, SC, VA).  These retailers have already removed this product from store shelves.  No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement.

While no health effects related to this product have been reported, P&G retrieved this product as a precautionary measure.  Consumers who purchased the product listed should stop using the product and discard it and contact Iams at the number below for a replacement voucher.  Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities.  Pets which have consumed this product and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian.

No matter what brand of food your dog eats you should be rotating the food.  Humans don’t eat the same dry food everyday for every meal and neither should your dog.  The best diet will be a mix of holistic dog food, raw, canned dog food and fresh veggies.  Canned dog food doesn’t have to come from a can.  Many times I use a raw mix that is dehydrated.  I add a bit of water and after a few minutes I have a healthy wet food for the dogs.  I do keep actual canned dog food in the cupboards for rotation feeding and for extra flavor for my dog’s meals.

Meat is where dogs get their protein, just like in the wild.  My dogs go nuts for venison canned dog food and seafood.  I never thought the dogs would like fish as much as they do.  I don’t switch the meats around all the time but I do add variety to their meals.

Some people like to feed a dog vegan food.  I’ve given a link below for the Wysong vegan dog food. If you have not already fed your dog a vegan or vegetarian dog food, please check with your dog’s doctor to make sure this type of food is best for your dog.

You have heard not to switch your dog’s food because it will upset his stomach.  It is because of eating the same food everyday for months or even years and then switching that causes the upset system.  Don’t you think the same would happen to you?  We do eat a varied diet and we know this is important for human health.  Now ask yourself why so many people tell us that feeding your dog a varied diet is harmful to him!

If your dog eats the same food day after day for years and this food has little more certain minerals than is ideal, or not enough of certain vitamins making an unhealthy ratio of nutrients the dog’s health will be compromised.  With no other food to help correct any deficiencies, excesses, and imbalances, the single food can contribute to disease.

Switch you dog’s food gradually, over 2 or 3 days at least.   Start with a ratio of 75% old food with 25% new food added for first meal. Gradually add more new food while reducing old food until your dog is eating 100% of the new food.

Keep in mind that if your dog has been eating very low quality grain based food; it could take a little longer to switch him over without stressing his system.  This is usually where the “sensitive stomach” theories come in.  It’s usually because the new food is a good quality higher protein food with real meat and much more of it.

Add variety with quality dog food using dry, canned, freeze dried dog food, frozen raw dog food and by adding your own fresh foods to any commercial dry food.  If you change the dog’s food often, your dog should certainly adjust smoothly and will have the health benefits of enjoying a tasty varied diet just like you do!

If your dog is doing well on common meat proteins such as beef, lamb, chicken and turkey, stay with these.  Save the more exotic meats such as bison, rabbit, kangaroo etc. in cause your dog develops a food allergy and you need to test “elimination diets” to find a protein that works.

Don’t be afraid to switch your dog’s food as long as you are switching to a better healthier dog food.
